Modelled

  1. Begin the lesson by asking the question, what makes us the people we are? Introduce the concept that we are who we are because of life experiences. It's not just about food and water that have made us grow physically. It's about all of our life experiences and the people in our lives that have helped make us who we are. Turn and talk: what are some things that have helped make you the person you are? Eg (people, places, events, culture).

  2. Tell students that they will be reading a new book that is very special. Explain the concept of ‘National Simultaneous Storytime.’ Discuss how the book that you are about to reveal, is going to be read by almost 2 million children to celebrate how wonderful picture books are. Introduce students to the mentor text 'Family Tree' By Josh Pyke and Ronojoy Ghosh. Discuss the front cover of the book. Think aloud as you make predictions about the text, then encourage students to do the same.

Guided

  1. Read the book and discuss. Think aloud as you make connections: Text-to-self, Text-to-text, Text-to-world.

  2. Now rule up four columns (people, places, events, culture) on the board/butcher’s paper and begin brainstorming the things that are important to your growth (see example below). As you do this, refer back to the text and model making meaningful text-to-self connections. Explain that everyone has different experiences and their tree will be different - that’s what makes us who we are.

    Now explain and model how the brainstorm can be turned into a growth tree, starting from the roots and creating branches with leaves (see image example).

Independent

  1. Students will brainstorm everything that is important to them and their growth, using the four columns (as in mini lesson), and show their teacher once finished. Then they will create their growth tree, choosing how to present it (eg. Art Set, Explain Edu, coloured paper, poster).

  2. Students will find someone else who has a common branch with them and discuss why this has helped shape them as a person.

  3. Finish the lesson with a circle discussion about how our trees won’t be fully grown as we are always changing and learning as we get older.

Differentiation

  • Support Students: Students can work with a template and use sentence stems to guide their thinking.
  • Extension Students: Encourage students to include as much detail in their branches as possible.
