What you'll need

  • Familiar story books used within the unit
  • Student’s reading finger made from previous lesson.
  • Levelled readers blown up or predictable sentences
  • Dot stickers
  • Paint
  • Pencils/textas

  1. Begin by reading a familiar book for enjoyment.

  2. Explain to students that today, during our lesson, they will be using their ‘Reading Fingers’ to read. Further, they will need to use the success criteria previously constructed to help them read.

  3. I can locate words on a page.
  4. I can point to where I start reading.
  5. I can point underneath words as I read them.
  6. I can confirm this is correct by counting the amount of words and what I said.
  7. Show the class the cover of a big book, blown up reader or predictable sentence with images. Note: When looking for predictable texts, choose sentences that include simple sight words such as ‘I’, ‘see’, ‘a’, ‘can’,’ to’, etc and also include an image to support early reading development. The image should easily allow students to decode the word.
    For example, ‘I see a dog’.

  8. Open the first page and ask students to locate the words on the page. Ask them to show you where to start reading and where to finish.

  9. Ask students, how many words are there on this page? Then, invite students to place one dot sticker (or you could draw a circle) underneath a word. Repeat and ask different students to place a dot sticker underneath each word.

  10. Model using your reading finger, touching the dot, as you read the sentence. Continue and finish the book.
