Narrative - The Day The Crayons Came Home
This fun, explicit and engaging unit introduces students to narrative writing through the mentor text ‘The Day The Crayons Came Home’ by Drew Daywalt, using the postcards as a stimulus to jump into their own narrative writing. Students will learn about narrative structure, focusing on the orientation, complication, series of events and resolution. They will explore characters and settings as they’re guided step-by-step to write a narrative from the perspective of a crayon and its response on the postcard. Students will also learn about hooks, expanded noun groups, topic sentences and the ‘Show Don’t Tell’ strategy. Finally, students will become the illustrator to add meaning and more information to their narrative through drawings.
