A fun writing lesson for grade K-6 to develop students’ ability to use word play to understand how poetry can be created. Students write a descriptive sentence and cut up the words to create a poem.
7  Lessons
Grade: 3-6

Poetic Devices

This unit will explicitly teach students to use the following poetic devices independently, in their writing: wordplay, personification, repetition, similes, metaphors, and alliteration. To demonstrate their learning throughout the unit, students will use the skills they have developed to write their own poem, using Kit Wright’s ‘The Magic Box’ as inspiration. Each lesson includes suggested texts and ideas to help students engage with each of the devices, and while they can be taught as stand alone lessons, they have been designed to be taught sequentially.
