Retelling a Story
This unit provides an exciting and interactive way to teach students a fundamental skill in both reading and writing - retelling. Students will be explicitly taught how to identify the beginning, middle and end of a story, and will use this to assist them to plan their writing. They will develop their segmenting skills to identify the phonemes in a word and attempt to spell them. Even better, they will engage in fun experiences such as going on a ‘bear hunt’ and using puppetry to assist them in comprehending a text. These lessons will also support students to plan before writing, using graphic organisers to record their ideas through drawing and labelling. In addition, capital letters, full stops and basic proofreading and editing skills will be introduced, a surefire way to set students up for success with independent writing.
