A fun reading lesson for grade 3-6 to develop students’ ability to identify and understand adjectives. Students read Ben Tyler and Diane Lucas’ wonderful text, “Walking in in Gagudju Country” which takes students on a walking tour through the Monson Forest in Kakadu. The text embeds the Kundjeyhmi language into the narrative, which is one of the native Indigenous dialects spoken in this particular part the Northern Territory. Here we have the start of a class anchor chart.

Walking in Gagudju Country - Adjectives And Technical Language

This mini-unit will explicitly step students through the skills of identifying, defining, understanding and using adjectives and technical vocabulary, to create a written text. In their written piece, students will describe a place that is close to their hearts. Students’ writing will be inspired by “Walking in Gagudju Country” by Ben Tyler and Diane Lucas - a rich and vibrant picture book that embeds the Kundjeyhmi language into the narrative. While these lessons may be adapted to other mentor texts, and as stand alone lessons, they have been specifically written to compliment each other and to be used in sequence.
